Cult Wines International Notes:

Remoissenet Père et Fils was founded in Beaune in the 1870s by Pierre-Alfred Remoissenet, and its cellars are built into the medieval walls of the town, hand-carved and running deep below the streets. For more than a century the house worked as a négociant of unusual patience, buying finished wine and laying it down rather than selling it on. The result is what collectors now recognise as one of the great libraries in Burgundy, a standing reserve running from the 1950s onward that has never left the cellar where it was first stored. The family sold the house in 2005, ending four generations of ownership, and the estate has since added vineyards and biodynamic farming while continuing to release from its historic stock.

This bottle is one of those releases. The back label sets out its history plainly: the wine lay in the cold, damp cellars beneath Beaune since the day it was bottled, never moved, never subject to noticeable temperature change, then drawn from the underground reserves, labelled and released, with the release date written by hand. A provenance record almost no bottle of this age can offer. 1953 was among the finest Burgundy vintages of the post-war era, a warm and generous season that gave wines of charm and balance. A Vosne-Romanée of this age is fully tertiary: pale garnet turning amber, with dried cherry, truffle, forest floor, leather and sweet spice, delicate rather than powerful. Open it gently, decant off the sediment, and drink it soon after.

Released from the Remoissenet cellars in September 2023, hand-dated 09/23 on the back label. Capsule is fresh with the Remoissenet R embossed at the crown, intact and undamaged, with the gold band unbroken. Front vintage shield and body label are clean, bright and fully legible with no tearing, staining or lifting. Back label crisp and complete. Fill level sits at the base of the neck, exceptional for a bottle of this age and consistent with the estate’s account of continuous cellar storage.
