Cult Wines International Notes:

Moët & Chandon traces its line to 1446, when Jean and Nicolas Moët were ennobled by Charles VII, though the house proper was founded in Épernay in 1743 by Claude Moët. It was his grandson Jean-Rémy who turned a merchant’s business into the first international luxury brand, pouring for Napoleon and for most of the courts of Europe. Brut Impérial, created in 1869, is the wine that made the name: a blend led by Pinot Noir and Meunier with Chardonnay and a substantial proportion of reserve wines, built for bright fruit, a supple palate and elegant maturity. It remains the most widely poured Champagne on earth, and the largest vineyard holding in the region stands behind it.

This is not a vintage wine. It is the limited Celebration Edition magnum that Moët released on 1 January 1999 for the turn of the millennium — a special disgorgement of Brut Impérial dressed for the occasion rather than a new cuvée. The house commissioned the Sterling Group in New York to design it, and the details are all specific to this release: the usual paper label replaced by a heavier textured card stock, the usual paper neck tie replaced by hand-cut silk ribbons hot-stamped in gold with the year 2000 and the words Brut Impérial, the ribbons crossed over the shoulder and fastened by hand with a red wax seal, and a gold capsule screen-printed in black. Magnums were sold on their own and in two presentation packages, one a round tin holding a magnum and a countdown watch, the other a metal briefcase with two magnums, a camera, a silver frame and a pen for signing the bottle. Most were opened on the night. Intact examples with the seal unbroken are the ones that were kept.

Gold capsule intact and bright, with light creasing at the crown consistent with handling. The crossed silk neck ribbons are present, complete and fully legible, with the gold 2000 hot-stamping clear on both tails. The red wax seal is intact and unbroken. Front label clean, bright and fully legible, with faint edge wear and light scattered marks to the glass. Backlit inspection shows no visible ullage, with the fill level and clarity appearing sound for a bottle of this age.
