Maison Veuve Clicquot, founded in 1772, owes its global prestige to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin—the “Grande Dame of Champagne”—who took control in 1805 after her husband’s untimely passing. A visionary entrepreneur, she revolutionized the region by inventing the riddling table to clarify sparkling wine and creating the first known blended Rosé Champagne. The house’s signature “Yellow Label” Brut has long been celebrated for its structure and consistency, anchored by a dominant percentage of Pinot Noir which provides the vinous strength the house is famous for. While the non-vintage blend is the estate’s calling card, Veuve Clicquot declares a Vintage Brut only in exceptional years, drawing fruit from historical Grand and Premier Cru vineyards to showcase a singular expression of time and terroir while maintaining the house’s hallmark power and complexity.
The 1995 growing season is revered as a turning point for Champagne, marking the end of a string of challenging, low-yielding years in the early 1990s. The season began with a mild winter followed by a rainy spring that delayed flowering, but a remarkably hot, dry, and sun-drenched summer rescued the vintage. August and September provided ideal conditions for steady fruit maturation, allowing the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to reach an exceptional balance of high natural sugars and ripe, vibrant acidity. Harvesting began under clear skies in late September, yielding a healthy, abundant crop of pristine quality.
