Cult Wines International Notes:
Founded in 1984 by H. William Harlan, Harlan Estate was established with a mission to create a California First Growth on the rugged hillsides of Oakville. Bill Harlan’s vision centered on a 200-year plan, emphasizing long-term stewardship and a culture of excellence modeled after the great estates of Bordeaux. The property encompasses 240 acres of natural splendor, yet only about 40 acres are under vine, nestled between 300 and 500 feet in elevation. Over decades, the estate has transitioned toward dry farming and a dedicated year-round vineyard team, fostering a deep connection between the land and the people who tend it. This commitment to detail has cemented Harlan’s reputation as a pioneer of Napa Valley cult wines.
The 2022 growing season was defined by resilience during the third consecutive year of drought. Despite the lack of rainfall, the vines benefited from a critical flush of water in late 2021 that provided essential energy for a temperate spring awakening. The season progressed with a consistent, mild summer until a historic Labor Day heat wave compressed the harvest timeline across the valley. At Harlan, the team initiated their earliest harvest on record, beginning in mid-August and finishing by early September to preserve freshness. The resulting yields were exceptionally small, averaging just 1.5 tons per acre, but produced wines of remarkable clarity, tension, and depth. The 2022 vintage is noted for its vibrant fruit and polished tannins, reflecting a successful navigation of a challenging and fast-paced season.
