Cult Wines International Notes:

The 2020 Jean-Claude Boisset Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a masterpiece of modern Burgundian “viniculture,” blending a legendary terroir with a highly technical, vineyard-led approach. Founded in 1961 by Jean-Claude and Claudine Boisset in the village of Vougeot, the Maison has undergone a profound evolution under the direction of Jean-Charles Boisset and winemaker Grégory Patriat. Since 2002, Patriat has moved the label away from large-scale production toward a boutique, négociant-éleveur model that prioritizes individual parcels and minimal intervention. The “jewel in the crown” is the Clos de la Roche, sourced from 55-year-old vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. This specific plot is uniquely oriented north-south on hard, brown limestone—often called “backbreaker” soil—producing just one barrel of wine per year that consistently earns the highest accolades for its structural power and “stony” mineral core.

The 2020 growing season was one of the earliest and most concentrated in the history of Burgundy, described by Patriat as an intensely challenging but rewarding vintage. Following a remarkably mild winter, the vines saw an early bud break and rapid growth. A hot, dry summer with significant drought conditions led to very small, thick-skinned berries with high phenolic concentration. Harvesting began exceptionally early, in late August, to preserve the essential acidity needed to balance the solar intensity of the fruit. In the cellar, Patriat utilized no-sulfur vinification and gravity-fed tanks at the state-of-the-art Ursulines winery in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Despite the heat of the year, the Clos de la Roche managed to retain a vibrant, “laser-like” focus and floral elegance, resulting in a 2020 vintage that is hailed for its immense aging potential and crystalline purity of fruit.
