100 points — Decanter (Charles Curtis MW, February 2022)
Curtis reports that the final months in cask moved the 2019 from a superb wine to one he considers essentially flawless. Already intense in black and red berry fruit with a complex web of terroir and secondary aromas, it has blossomed and shed a skein of reduction to reveal its aromatics and show boundless generosity in its density and structure. All the components work together to give a wine satisfying even now that will continue improving for many decades. Drinking window 2025 to 2065.

A classic, super-fresh La Tâche nose, restrained and only grudgingly offering a kaleidoscopic range of spice laced with floral nuance over red and dark berry fruit. Superb detail to the muscular, big-bodied flavours, brimming with minerality and dry extract before an explosively long, balanced, youthfully austere finish. Meadows calls it sleek, classy and powerful, packed with development potential, needing many decades to resolve its firm tannins. He compares it to the 2015, 2010 and 1999, and suggests it may ultimately surpass all of them — which, as he notes, is really saying something.

Kelley calls the 2019 sublime. Wild berries and bergamot mingle with rose petals, exotic spices, violets, clove and cinnamon; the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional palate of breathtaking plenitude. Elegantly muscular, vibrant and pristinely balanced, closing long and resonant. He finds it more structured and broader-shouldered than the Romanée-Conti itself, and says it will demand and richly reward bottle age.

Martin records the picking over three days from 16 to 18 September at 23 hl/ha. The bouquet is beautifully defined but broody and introspective at first, becoming highly perfumed after ten minutes with potpourri, rose petals, dark berry fruit and a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied, extraordinarily well defined and pure, with more spice than recent vintages and a pinch of white pepper lingering for a full minute after the wine has gone. He notes real structure here and expects the wine to close down for a period during its long evolution in bottle. 994 cases produced.

An even dark crimson across the glass. The bouquet speaks of wealth to follow — darker fruit with pepper, far more backward than the Richebourg — and only a fraction of its potential is legible yet. Classic old roses show more on the palate alongside black pepper, with notably more tannin than the wines beside it, though entirely in balance. Brooding and backward, with the fruit building back to cover the tannins as it sits.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms its holdings from Vosne-Romanée under long-established biodynamic practice, at yields among the lowest in Burgundy. La Tâche is the larger of the domaine’s two monopoles at just over six hectares. The vineyard in its present form was settled by a 1936 court ruling that folded the neighbouring Les Gaudichots into the La Tâche appellation, giving the domaine sole ownership of the enlarged cru. Where Romanée-Conti is famously reticent in youth, La Tâche is the extrovert of the cellar — darker, more overtly powerful, and for many collectors the more thrilling wine to drink before either reaches full maturity.

2019 was a hot, dry and exacting season. Spring frost and a difficult flowering cut the crop sharply, and summer heat concentrated what remained, yet the wines held their acidity and lift rather than tipping into weight. The domaine picked its La Tâche from 16 to 18 September at 23 hectolitres per hectare, and just 994 cases were produced. The wine is broody and introspective at first, opening into potpourri, rose petal, wild berries, bergamot, clove, cinnamon and a hint of liquorice. The palate is muscular and big-bodied, brimming with minerality and dry extract, pristinely balanced, with white pepper lingering long after the wine has gone. The finish is explosively long and youthfully austere, and the firm tannic frame will need decades to resolve.
