Ratings & Tasting Notes:
98 points Falstaff
Bright ruby with a slightly pale rim. Very clear and precise on the nose, with notes of raspberry cream and cherries, delicate spices, especially white pepper, and an exciting finish. Grippy, very well-placed tannins, with a fine, creamy finish, rich notes of chocolate and raspberries, and plenty of plum. A very long finish. [Translated from German to English]
95 points James Suckling
A really beautiful Amarone that shows fresh, glazed cherries, red licorice, dried nutmeg, caramelized orange peel, dried rose petals, hot stones and red-plum essence. Medium to full body, really tight and compact tannins, pinpoint acidity and a long, spicy finish. So dry, linear and well defined. Drink now or hold.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is widely considered the quintessential expression of traditional Amarone. The Bertani winery, founded in 1857, is a historical icon in the Veneto region, and their Amarone is distinguished by a profound commitment to elegance, balance, and exceptional aging potential, setting it apart from more modern, opulent styles.
The wine is crafted from carefully selected native grapes—primarily Corvina and Rondinella—sourced from the prestigious Classico area of Valpolicella. The defining characteristic of Amarone production is the appassimento process, where grapes are naturally air-dried on arele (bamboo mats) for several months after harvest. This concentrates the sugars, color, and flavors, resulting in a unique intensity.
Bertani favors a long, slow fermentation and an unusually extensive aging period, often spending six to seven years in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. This meticulous process yields a wine of immense complexity and structure, yet one that remains remarkably fresh. The classic profile exhibits intense aromas of cherry preserve, dried rose petals, licorice, earth, and tobacco. On the palate, it is dry, powerful, and impeccably balanced by vibrant acidity and fine tannins, ensuring that the wine is not just enjoyable now, but can evolve beautifully over many decades.
