Ratings & Tasting Notes:
Domaine Prieuré Roch: Cultish Burgundy with a Storied Past
A Gem from Burgundy:
The Chambertin Clos de Béze exemplifies Domaine Prieuré Roch’s philosophy: complex, well-balanced wines. The 2007 vintage is considered excellent for red Burgundy, offering early enjoyment.
A Legacy of Minimal Intervention:
Domaine Prieuré Roch is a rising star in Burgundy, revered for its minimal intervention winemaking. Established in 1988 by Henri-Frédéric Roch, it boasts vineyards across the Côte d’Or, concentrated in Nuit-Saint-Georges. Pinot Noir reigns supreme, though they also craft Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune.
Rooted in Legend:
Roch, a member of the Leroy family and co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, founded Prieuré Roch with just two hectares from Romanée-Conti, sold to finance expansion elsewhere. Today, the estate spans over 14 hectares, mostly in Nuit-Saint-Georges, including prestigious Grand Crus and Premier Crus.
Clos de Corvées: A Rare Gem:
Prieuré Roch’s crown jewel is the uncommonly large (five-hectare) Clos de Corvées, a Premier Cru monopole in Premeaux-Prissey (Nuits-Saint-Georges). While Premier Crus are celebrated, Grand Crus like Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze and Clos de Vougeot command the highest prices.
Beyond Premier Cru:
The estate also produces wines from Vosne-Romanée’s Les Suchots Premier Cru and village-level holdings. In 2010, they expanded into the Côte de Beaune, crafting Chardonnay from Ladoix.
Organic Practices and Low Yields:
All vineyards are meticulously managed using organic practices. Additionally, strict low-yield production, implemented in the early 1990s, contributes to the concentration and quality of Prieuré Roch’s wines.
