More vintages like 2002, please…especially if they give us wines like this rosé, a quiet, persistent, thrillingly precise pinot noir-with fruit that manages to be vivid and supple, a color that hints at fresh apricot and a scent that shifts from apricot to fresh red berries. The fruit presence submerges into the delicate fortitude of the tannin, reemerging with bass notes of wildflowers and high notes of rose. This has plenty of power in reserve if you chose to age it, and enough substance to pour with prawns in a mildly spicy Vietnamese green curry.

The 2002 Brut Rose Extra Cuvee de Reserve is a gorgeous wine, even if it is a bit buttoned up at this stage. Layers of well-delineated aromatics emerge over time, melding seamlessly into a chiseled, precise core of fruit. This shows quite a bit of depth and richness, all while maintaining superb freshness and clarity. Though delicious today, I imagine this will be a highly rewarding bottle to follow over the next decade or so. This is an absolutely exquisite Champagne from Pol Roger. The Rose Extra Cuvee de Reserve is 35% Chardonnay and 65% Pinot Noir, of which 15% is still Pinot, with full malolactic fermentation. Lot number illegible. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Cult Wines International Notes:

The Pol Roger Brut Rosé Vintage is an exclusive, highly-regarded release from the House, produced only in limited quantities during exceptional vintage years. Unlike some other prestige rosés, Pol Roger does not produce a non-vintage Rosé. It is typically crafted from a base blend of Pol Roger’s Brut Vintage (often around 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay), sourced from selected Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Its signature, delicate salmon-pink hue is achieved by blending in approximately 15% of still red Pinot Noir wine (vin rouge) from top sites, such as Bouzy and Ambonnay, before the second fermentation. The wine undergoes a full malolactic fermentation and benefits from extended cellar aging—typically around seven to eight years on the lees—in Pol Roger’s famously deep, cool cellars (33 meters below ground), which helps develop its fine, persistent mousse and complexity. This patient maturation process yields a champagne of outstanding elegance, structure, and finesse, offering a palate rich in vibrant red fruit notes, including wild strawberry, raspberry, and redcurrant, often underlined by hints of citrus and brioche. Known for its remarkable freshness and longevity, the Pol Roger Rosé Vintage is a sophisticated gastronomic choice, pairing beautifully with grilled fish, roasted poultry, or fruit-based desserts.
