The 2000 Brut Grand Cru Millesime is a gorgeous, elegant wine laced with perfumed, fragrant fruit, oak, spices, minerals and smoke. The wine possesses incredible finesse in its mousse, and a long, creamy finish that caresses the palate with notable silkiness. This is a sensual, beautifully-balanced wine from Egly-Ouriet. The 2000 Brut Grand Cru Millesime spent 82 months on its lees prior to being bottled with no fining or filtration. (AG)

Cult Wines International Notes:

The Egly-Ouriet estate, rooted in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims, stands as a benchmark for the modern grower-producer movement in Champagne. Established in 1930, the house began with modest vineyard holdings, but its rise to global cult status is largely attributed to the vision of Francis Egly, the fourth generation to helm the domaine, who took over in the 1980s. Francis immediately began converting the estate to $100\%$ estate bottling (Récoltant-Manipulant) and implemented meticulous vineyard management, including organic farming practices, extremely low yields, and late harvesting to achieve optimal ripeness. This dedication ensures that the high-quality Pinot Noir (which dominates the estate’s holdings) and Chardonnay grapes are the fullest possible expression of their chalk and clay-limestone terroir.

The Grand Cru Brut Millésime is the pinnacle of the Egly-Ouriet portfolio, produced only in superior years and sourced exclusively from their prized Grand Cru parcels, predominantly in Ambonnay. This wine epitomizes the house style, often described as “Burgundy with bubbles” due to its powerful, vinous, and deeply concentrated texture. A blend typically centered on Pinot Noir (70%) with a remainder of Chardonnay (30%), the Millésime undergoes fermentation and extended aging in oak barrels, typically without malolactic conversion, which preserves a focused acidity. Crucially, the wine benefits from an exceptionally long period of aging sur lattes (on the lees), often exceeding 100 months (over eight years), before final disgorgement with an extremely low dosage (often Extra Brut). The resulting Champagne is monumental in scale, balancing concentrated flavors of roasted orchard fruit, toasted brioche, and spice with tremendous structure and a profound, chalky minerality, ensuring it is one of the most age-worthy and complex vintage expressions produced in the region.
