Tasting Notes:

100 points Decanter

A sublime wine, unbelievably youthful and vibrant still and one that holds attention from the first sip. Beautiful aromatic complexity on the nose; floral notes, patchouli, sandalwood, cotton candy, salted caramel and cherries. Feels like a thoroughbred that hasn’t yet hit its stride. A beautifully lifted expression with mouthwatering acidity, tobacco and smoke, dark plum and berry fruit underpinned by beautiful yet tight tannins – articulated and nuanced, confident and powerful. This is structured and evocative with persistence and poise: should easily go strong for another 10-20 years. Winemaker at the time Jean-Noël Malbec. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. (GH)

100 points Wine Advocate

One of the three or four very greatest wines of the vintage, the 1982 Latour delivers aromas of dark berry fruit, rich cigar wrapper, loamy soil, walnuts and smoke. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it’s deep, seamless and immensely concentrated, its fleshy core framed by sweet, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, expansive finish. A monument to the greatness of Bordeaux, it is one wine that’s worthy of all the praise that has been lavished on it over the years. (WK)

100 points Vinous

The 1982 Latour is the most consistent of the First Growths in this auspicious vintage. Tasted from both bottle and magnum in the UK in recent months, this note comes from an ex-château magnum tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux. It exudes class and majesty on the nose with its copious but brilliantly focused black fruit laced with cedar and graphite. To use a phrase I have written before, it is blue-blooded…regal. That comes through on a palate that has a haunting symmetry and a killer finish that is brilliantly defined and audaciously long, graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Quite simply, claret does not come better than this. (NM)

99 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 1982 Chateau Latour is another powerful 1982 that’s drinking beautifully today and has a big, sweet nose of blackcurrants, saddle leather, cedar, and Asian spices that just comes jumping out of the glass. Deep, concentrated, and powerful, it takes 30 minutes in the glass to open up on the palate and still has ripe, polished tannins, thrilling length, and an impeccably balanced, layered personality.

98 points James Suckling

This shows wonderful decadence with meaty, dark chocolate and ripe plums on the nose that follows through on the palate. It’s full bodied, with super silky tannins that caress your palate. The fruit in the wine changes to a spicy, stony undertone. It seems to evolve all the time in the glass. This has a long life to it. But why wait? So delicious.

98 points Wine Spectator

Big and chewy. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long currant, berry and cherry character. Underrated. Still more to come in this wine. (JS)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Château Latour is a legendary left bank Bordeaux wine estate, renowned for its exceptional quality and rich history. “La Tour” translates from French to “The Tower”. The estate features the historical Saint-Lambert tower, that was built in the 14th century.
Most interesting about Chateau Latour is its consistency. The estate is known for producing exceptional quality wines even in poor vintages. Something its immediate neighbors cannot rival.
Its history traces back to the 14th century, with a legacy deeply intertwined with the Médoc region.
It was classified as only 1 of 4 First Growths in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, solidifying its status as one of the world’s most prestigious wine producers.
Latour is celebrated for producing powerful, structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines with remarkable longevity. The “Enclos,” a 47-hectare vineyard surrounding the château, is considered the heart of its terroir and the source of its Grand Vin.
The wines are known for their intense blackcurrant flavors, firm tannins, and exceptional aging potential.
The terroir of deep gravel soils contribute greatly to the wines character.
Château Latour represents the pinnacle of Bordeaux winemaking, combining centuries of tradition with an unwavering commitment to excellence.
