Ratings & Tasting Notes:

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The ’70 Les Forts de Latour has aged exceedingly well over forty years. A light, gravely, earthy, mulberry-scented bouquet that just lacks a little definition due to its rusticity. Medium-bodied on the palate, still retaining a pleasing degree of freshness with red-berried fruit: vestiges of raspberry and wild strawberry, although dominated by cigar box and leather. Smooth texture, quite corpulent, as if the merlot is in the driving seat rather than the Cabernet. Soft landing on the finish. Drink now. Tasted June 2009. (Neal Martin’s Wine Journal)

Jancis Robinson

Magnum. Round, ripe, open earthy and full meaty complex, cedar wood, damp earth aromas, touch of volatile acidity, soft palate and tannins, firm acidity Pauillac elegant, fruit confit and dried, at its peak not to age for much longer. (RS)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Les Forts de Château Latour is the esteemed second wine of the legendary First Growth estate, Château Latour, located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Considered by many to be a “super second,” it stands apart from most other second wines due to its exceptional quality, complexity, and age-worthiness.

The wine is produced from a blend of younger vines from the same prestigious Enclos vineyards as the grand vin, as well as grapes from specific parcels designated exclusively for Les Forts. While the blend mirrors the grand vin, it is typically more approachable and fruit-forward in its youth. The primary grape varieties used are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Les Forts de Château Latour offers a true taste of the Château Latour style—combining power with elegance and a Pauillac signature of blackcurrant, cedar, and mineral notes. Due to its high quality and consistent excellence, it often rivals the grand vins of other prestigious estates and commands a price that reflects its pedigree. It has become a highly sought-after wine for collectors and enthusiasts who desire the essence of Château Latour without the price tag or the long aging required of the flagship wine.
